Caligae FAQ Page

Q: Are your Caligae authentic?
A: Let’s put it this way, Julius Caesar said “Wow!”. Just kidding, but to see some direct quotes from some of my real customers click HERE.
My Caligae are based on the pattern found at Legio XX site. Many Reenactors use this same pattern.
Q: What do you use to make your Caligae?
A: We use Vegetable Tanned Leather. 6-7 oz is used for the uppers, and 8 -9 oz leather for the soles. My leather is purchased from Springfield Leather
Q: How thick are your soles?
A: Due to the nature of Vegetable tanned Leather, there is some variation to the thickness of the soles. However the average thickness is about ˝”.
Q: What Kind of hobnails do you use?
A: I use Decorative Wrought Head Black Oxide Finish nails, 5/8” in length. Tremont Nail Company
Q: How is the quality of your products and what I mean by that is: Can I wear them all day and still march 10 miles in them without worrying about them falling apart.
A: What do Sleeping Bear Dunes (3 miles of hilly sand), Warren Dunes (over 5 miles of hilly sand), Ludington State Park (over 15 miles of sandy hills, and mixed forest trails in two days), Garden of the Gods (rock climbing), Walker Mountain (3+ miles of rocky climbing), Tahquamenon Falls River Trail (5 miles of very hilly terrain), Silver Leaf Renaissance Festival, Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Saginaw Bay, and the Tahquamenon River, and Cedar River all have in Common? I have hiked, or walked in all of the above with my current pair of Caligae. In addition, I usually play Disk Golf, run errands, and otherwise live in them. Just a note of Warning: You may not be tough enough for my Caligae!
Q: Can I get them wet? Will they shrink / expand?
A: I have repeatedly walked in wet grass with my Caligae as well as three of the Great Lakes, and several rivers. Pictured here is my walk in the Tahquamenon River recently. After walking in the river I hiked another three miles.
